SDG Ambassador

“LRM as a SDG ambassador”

With LRM, we regularly share our experiences, both nationally and internationally. After all, with our mining sites be-MINE and Terhills, and with our business campuses Thor Park, Corda Campus and DronePort, we have very inspiring cases that can serve as examples for other countries. Sometimes we speak at (international) conferences, participate in panel discussions or organise our own events on themes such as sustainability or reconversion. We also regularly give extensive guided tours to ministers, administrators, companies, students, embassies, etc.

Workshop: India Just Transition Dialogues

In May 2025, our CEO Tom Vanham participated in this dialogue, which brought together stakeholders (policymakers, practitioners, industry, academia, labour and civil society) from across the European Union and India to showcase existing tools and approaches to support the successful repurposing of post-coal assets in coal regions and districts.

Mine reclamation and repurposing can be an important opportunity to help mitigate negative economic and social impacts. With this workshop, they wanted to outline existing barriers to the effective management of mine closure and repurposing to support a just transition and share lessons learnt and good practices to overcome key obstacles around data availability, financing, governance and stakeholder engagement.

The reconversions realised by LRM brought a lot of inspiration and useful information to the attendees.

International field trip

In June 2025, an international delegation, including Alun Davies from Wales, together with European Alliance Group and Flemish Minister-President Karl Vanlouwe and Andy Pieters visited our Corda Campus and our Thor Park campus. It was a pleasure to explain our approach to reconversion, innovation and economic development to colleagues from other European regions.

Annual Political Dialogue 2025 in Poland: initiative for Coal Regions in Transition

The Initiative for coal regions in transition’s Annual Political Dialogue is organised by the European Commission in cooperation with the Wielkopolska Region, the City of Konin and the Regional Development Agency in Konin. The event gives voice to both policymakers and practitioners, those who are designing and implementing transition on the ground in coal+ regions, and those active in EU capitals. Our CEO Tom Vanham shared his experiences during the impressive transformations of Terhills and be-MINE. Among other things, he zoomed in on how to attract private investment in Coal+ regions.

Executive Table: ESG

In spring 2025, LRM organised an executive table on ESG for entrepreneurs. What impact do ESG and sustainability measures have on a company’s growth? How do you map your company’s sustainability in a clear report? How do other companies do this?

Conference: reconversion of a former mining site

In 2024, Belgium holded the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. As part of that presidency, LRM organised a conference where we shared our experiences of the past 30 years in turning a former (mining) site into a beautiful place with a positive impact on employment, sustainability and economic growth. With Hasselt’s Corda Campus, be-MINE in Beringen and Terhills in Maasmechelen, LRM can present 3 concrete transformations of former mining sites and companies. A topic that attracted a very international audience: among the 80 attendees, ministers, ambassadors and representatives from Zimbabwe, Nepal and Ghana were present.
